Week 11 in Douala: I actually get a picture of a monkey this time (Feb 7, 2022)
Bonjour amis et familles!
This was a very eventful week with a lot of cool lessons and other experiences (check the subject line!) I can't wait to tell y'all about it!
WHEN IN AFRICA
So I mentioned that I saw a monkey last week but couldn't get a picture of it. But this week, not only did I see another monkey, but I was successful of getting a picture of him just chilling. We were walking in this neighborhood we actually go to a lot but we decided to go down a different street in this neighborhood. It makes me wonder how many times I missed seeing this guy. There he was, just chilling on this foundation of a house while these kids played with a soccer ball around it. It was quite the surprise to me (my comp was unfazed). Enjoy the picture!
MISSIONARY MOMENTS OF THE WEEK
We taught 14 different individual people this week - that might be a record high for me! Let's get into some highlights:
We have found a whole family to start teaching! A couple weeks ago, this guy named Boris came up to us and asked us questions. Now we have had 4 lessons with him, and 2 with his wife, Marie, and he's absolutely been loving it. He's kept all his Book of Mormon reading commitments, has remembered and retained a lot of important doctrine, and I'm pretty sure he's elect. His wife has been accepting too but she's also had to take care of their baby as we've taught. We've got hope for her too to continue to progress.
We had an experience on Saturday where we couldn't get an appointment before 2 pm, but we felt we should get out of the apartment before then. We do some contacting in this neighborhood and we get to a point where there's no path anymore. This lady calls out to us, "Did you guys get lost? Come, I'll help you!" So we go up to her porch and she starts talking like she knew us already. Turns out it was an old friend of the Church who'd been taught almost everything. We start talking and she explains the Book of Mormon perfectly to her mom who was sitting there. She was more than happy to schedule an appointment with us for next week.
SCRIPTURE/SPIRITUAL THOUGHT OF THE WEEK
Jarom 1:11:
"Wherefore, the prophets, and the priests, and the teachers, did labor diligently, exhorting with all long-suffering the people to diligence; teaching the law of Moses, and the intent for which it was given; persuading them to look forward unto the Messiah, and believe in him to come as though he already was. And after this manner did they teach them."
Deep cut this week. Jarom is the shortest book in the Book of Mormon - only 15 verses. It covers quite a few years of history and focuses on what is most important, especially the spiritual history. And what more important spiritual truth for the prophets of this era to stress in
their writing than the truth about the Messiah? What greater exhortation could Jarom highlight than to persuade to 'look forward' unto Christ, and 'believe in Him?' I know that the truth that Jesus is in fact the Christ is the most important truth we can know. That's what I'm doing - to persuade others to look forward to and come toward their Savior. And I love doing it!
Je vous aime tous,
Elder May
