Week 12 in Libreville: We meet a 'prophetess'

Image
Bonjour amis et familles! I've almost spent 3 months here in Africa at this point and I'm loving each week more and more. This week edition will proceed as follows: MISSIONARY MOMENTS OF THE WEEK This week was actually kind of hard in terms of finding new people to teach. We got a big goose-egg to show for our efforts this week, but it wasn't for lack of trying! For example: We had a 'lesson' with this lady who we met the week before and she seemed really interested. The first thing she said, however, after our introductions, was, "God called me to be a prophetess." She then talked at us about her 'ministry' and all she did to preach the word of God, among a few other things. We couldn't get a word in edgeways, so eventually we just ended the 'lesson'. She did accept a pamphlet on the Restoration, but I think we're gonna leave her to do her thing.  On a more progressing-the-work-of-the- Lord note, we had a great couple of lessons an...

Week 11 in Libreville: sometimes I forget I'm in Africa

Image
Another week on the equator.* Let's get into it: WHEN IN AFRICA So many funny moments this week: Elder Zoller burned his leg hair off because the gas oven *briefly* exploded. Everyone's fine and it won't happen again.  Some driver almost ran over my foot. It was a really busy area so I forgive him.  Also crossing the highway is perfectly normal. Like, there are designated crosswalks on these highways where cars are going 90 km/h**. Kind of stressful. MISSIONARY MOMENTS OF THE WEEK We're still trying to teach Margueritte and Clarie as much as possible. In one of our lessons this week, Margueritte started teaching the Word of Wisdom to Claire. She's super receptive, knowledgable, and ready for baptism. We might even move her June 12th date up. We had a new-person lesson with this guy who was born in Cameroon, lived in Nigeria for forever, and now lives here. He knows little English so I want to know more about is time in Anglophone Nigeria. But, he took all of the i...

Week 10 in Libreville: Chicken and rice and chicken and rice and chicken and rice and chic

Image
Bonjour amis et familles! My worst fear came true this week. When I got my call to go to Africa, anyone who knew anything about Africa told me that I was going to have nothing but chicken and rice. Every day. And that came to pass this week. Every night we had chicken and rice. But I got the stuff to make pizza this week so that's good. MISSIONARY MOMENTS OF THE WEEK So Elder Zoller and I walked into 2 people with a baptismal date when we got transferred into this new area. Score. We've only gotten to meet with one of them, but we've met with her 3 times, as well as her sister, who doesn't have a date yet but is progressing rapidly. I'll call them Margueritte and Claire, respectively. Margueritte is super ready to be baptized - we've been giving her reading assignments out of the Book of Mormon and then she'll teach the principle in the chapter to us the next lesson. Her faith is 'très inspirant' (very inspiring). The aforementioned date is June 12th...

Week 9 in Libreville: "Change is gonna come"

Image
(I know that's the name of a song by someone famous and that's why I used it as a subject line but I've been out too long to remember so someone help me please!) Bonjour amis et familles! I moved. Again. I'm in my 3rd area in the past month. I'm also with my 3rd companion in the past month.  You see, we got 2 new American missionaries on Saturday and we had to accomodate. So my Mission President decided to move me down to Awendje, which is in Libreville 2. I had to say goodbye to Elder Meyer, Elder Ilunga, and Elder Utshudi (my old comp) and come down here. I'm now with Elder Zoller, one of the original 'Gabonese Seven', and him and I are sharing the apartment with Elder Ilunga (there are 2 of them) and the brand-new guy, Elder Sheppard.  I had to say goodbye to all our awesome people we were teaching and who we had found, and now the work begins anew. Such is the mission life.  FUNNY QUOTE OF THE WEEK "I'm Joseph Smith today!" So - the w...
