Week 5 in Yaoundé
Bonjour amis et familles!
Happy 4th! Happy 9 months for me!
This was another quick week with a very eventful weekend. Time goes by really quickly when you plan on being somewhere (in this case the mission office) for 4 hours every day. Let's get into it:
MISSIONARY MOMENTS OF THE WEEK
So many so many this week. All of them happened this weekend. On Saturday, my companion and I attended not one but 2 different baptisms - one in the morning and one around 4 PM. We sandwiched those events with a new-person lesson. It was this lady who a member had brought to church last week. One of the first things she said is that she belonged to another church, and seemed kind of wary of our message as we continued. But that kind of changed once we started talking about Joseph Smith and the Restoration and the Book of Mormon. She sat up straight, was really engaged, and she liked the message. She even came back to church yesterday.
On Sunday, we put not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 PEOPLE on date for baptism! The first was this sister of the Branch President's wife who we've been teaching since before I got here. Her name is Laurenne and she's super ready for baptism - all we had to do was ask the question. We decided on the 17th.
The next 3 were all part of this family that was referred to us by a member where the grandma is in a wheelchair, if you remember. After a really good lesson of the 5 steps of the Gospel (the 3rd of which is baptism), Elder Dion felt impressed to ask them if they'd be baptized. And the grandma and 2 grandkids said yes! We decided on the 24th.
SCRIPTURE/SPIRITUAL THOUGHT OF THE WEEK
Alma 26:27:
"Now when our hearts were depressed, and we were about to turn back, behold, the Lord comforted us, and said: Go amongst thy brethren, the Lamanites, and bear with patience thine afflictions, and I will give unto you success."
As of Saturday, every other companionship in the district had had a baptism this transfer. You could say I was getting discouraged, just a little bit. Cameroon isn't as hard as teaching the Lamanites (no one here wants to kill me), but the principle is the same. I've had to learn to be patient a little bit, and trust that the fruits of my labor will eventually come.
Je vous aime tous et j'espère que vous allez bien et avez eu une bonne fête de l'indépendance!
Elder May
PS: The one pic this week is this guy dressed up like a scoutmaster who wanted a picture with us. I had so many questions.
